Paulist Fr. Larry Rice

Our Chaplain, Paulist Fr. Larry Rice, has decades of experience in Catholic Campus Ministry.

He has served as Director of the University Catholic Center at the University of Texas in Austin, TX (2016-2020). He has also served as the Director of Vocations for the Paulist Fathers (2013-2016) and as the Paulists’ First Consultor (2010 -2014), and a member of the Presidential Board of the Paulists, the team responsible for the administration and governance of the Paulists. In addition, while First Consultor, he also served as the the director of St. Mary’s on the Lake, the Paulist summer retreat on Lake George, NY.

Prior to becoming First Consultor, Fr. Rice was the director of the St. Thomas More Newman Center, the center for Catholic Campus Ministry at Ohio State University in Columbus OH (2002 – 2010).

Fr. Rice earned a Bachelor of Arts in General Arts and Sciences from the Pennsylvania State University (1983), and a Masters of Divinity from the Catholic University of America (1989). He entered the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle (the Paulist Fathers) in 1983, and was ordained a priest in 1989. As transitional deacon (1989) he served on the staff of the Catholic Information Center in Toronto, Ontario; after his priesthood ordination he served for one year as Pastoral Associates at the Church of the Good Shepherd in New York City.

From 1990 – 2002, Fr. Rice was the associate director of ITP-Paulist Communications, and producer for Paulist Media Works. Fr. Rice worked in both the production and marketing of Paulist products for radio, television, multimedia, and Internet projects. Fr. Rice was the Producer of The Paulist NewsMagazine, the award-winning weekly news and features program syndicated nationally by the Paulists. In 1997, the Paulist NewsMagazine won the Gabriel Award for Best Religious Radio Program in National Distribution.

Fr. Rice’s expertise includes communications training, consulting, crisis communications management, strategic planning, and technology for ministry. Between 2000 and 2010, Fr. Rice was a weekly contributor to Catholic Radio Weekly, the radio program produced and distributed by the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops. In February of 2008 he became a regular contributor to the Busted Halo Radio Program on SiriusXM Satellite Radio’s Catholic Channel, featuring his “Facts of Faith” catechetical works. In March and April of 2021, Fr. Larry was the guest host of the Busted Halo show.

Fr. Rice is a member of the Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. His professional associations have included UNDA-USA (the national association of Church media professionals), Catholic Campus Ministry Association, National Catholic Development Conference, Conference of Major Superiors of Men, and the National Religious Vocations Conference.
